A Quantitative Framework for Assessing Wide Receiver Blocking Effectiveness Using Player Tracking Data
2024-25Updated May 15, 2025Archived
Project Overview
A tracking-data framework for evaluating wide receiver and skill-player downfield blocking, combining defender angles, speed, ball geometry, and blocker-defender movement into a Blocking Effectiveness Score.
Problem & Objective
Wide receiver blocking is one of the least-measured skills in football — traditional charting is subjective and inconsistent across evaluators.
Analytical Approach
The team derives a blocking effectiveness metric from player tracking data, capturing separation held, displacement created, and time-to-contact for skill players on downfield blocks.
Key Result & Impact
The resulting score correlates with run game success rates and provides a repeatable alternative to subjective film grades.
